Mechanical Engineers Impact Climate Change 

As a student pursuing an academic major in Mechanical Engineering Technology, there are many opportunities for me to make tremendous impact on climate change in the future. In general, the goal for engineers is to create solutions for humans. When designing objects, climate change has to be taken into consideration. Mechanical engineers play an important role in setting up the foundation for infrastructure and tools that will be environmentally friendly and sustainable. Professional organizations such as The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Engineers Without Borders are planning and working together to come up with strategies and innovations that will tackle the problem of climate change in areas of technology, workforce, and society.

In the future, I would like to have a career as a mechanical engineer in the transportation industry. Whether it is being involved in public transportation or private automobiles, this industry is directly linked to greenhouse gas emissions because fossil fuels are used to power vehicles. I aspire to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions to decrease the amount of fossil fuels being burned. By implementing advancements in alternative and renewable energy sources, such as electricity or hydrogen, I want the industry to stop relying on fossil fuels. While I am aware that this change will take a long time to implement, I believe that one day we will be able to tremendously decrease the use of fossil fuels by more than a half.

Electric cars are rising in popularity amongst society today for their renewable energy source and modern design. Mechanical engineers contribute to the components that make up the electric drive system including the battery, electric motor, and braking system. They are involved in improving and developing more advanced batteries for longer life, faster charging, and longer range. If all these components are improved, it is more enticing for consumers to buy these electric cars and completely switch over to using renewable energy. In addition to the battery, mechanical engineers also are deeply involved in the evolution of the braking systems of electric vehicles. They can design the braking system to recapture kinetic energy during deceleration to replenish the battery and extend the driving range. Making constant improvements on electric cars is one of the many ways to maximize the performance of vehicles while taking in account of climate change.

Other than renewable energy, mechanical engineers also focus on the materials and manufacturing process to make the vehicle lightweight without compromising the structural integrity or safety standards. By using stronger and more durable materials, engineers can improve vehicle efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. They test a wide range of manufacturing techniques to optimize the production process and minimize energy consumption. One of the manufacturing techniques they can use is additive manufacturing which involves 3D printing. It uses computer-aided design software (CAD) to tell the printer how the design should be made. The printer will then add the material layer-by-layer to create the desired object. By exploring a diverse list of materials such as high-strength alloys, composite materials, and advanced polymers, mechanical engineers can discover new ways to enhance the performance of different vehicles.

There are many possibilities of contributing to climate change as a mechanical engineer. By leveraging advancements in electric vehicle technology, materials science, and manufacturing processes, mechanical engineers can propel us towards a future where sustainability is not just a goal, but a reality. My aspiration to pursue a career in the transportation industry as a mechanical engineer is rooted in the goal to make a positive change against climate change. Through continual technological advancement and the adoption of sustainable practices, mechanical engineers play a vital role in reducing environmental impact, enhancing energy efficiency, and sculpting a future that prioritizes sustainability for generations to come.
