My Take on Climate Change

Hi, my name is Matthew and climate change has had its impact on myself, and many people I know. A major portion of these are the impacts on agriculture. Farms are being affected, especially in South Asia with extreme weather leading to many crop failures such as rice and onions. These crop failures tend to affect the economy of many countries, especially 3rd world countries like Bangladesh. Ever since my recent visit to my family in Bangladesh, I observed that onions, which are a staple ingredient in many Bengali dishes, had a market price increase of nearly 10X in some areas due to its low supply. Another commodity is rice, specifically Indian basmati rice. Recently in the summer, India banned exports of their basmati rice due to extreme weather from torrential rain and mudslides that ruined crops all over. This led to a surge in price of rice in their own country forcing them to ban it which in consequence will affect many all over the world that consume their product.

These are just a little bit of my experiences with climate change. Some solutions that I can offer is to improve ground public transportation enough to try and get people off the dependency of personal cars. NYC is attempting this on streets meant only for busses; an example would be all of 14th street in Manhattan plans to prevent cars from entering certain areas. And something like bullet trains in America can help reduce the dependency of short air travel or the need for personal cars. Even better would be for these means of travel to be powered by  renewable energy.
