As a student of hospitality management, the hospitality industry is an important source of income for a country. However, climate change is related to the survival of the hospitality industry. Compared with other industries, the tourism industry may be more susceptible to climate change. Climate change will affect the ecological resources of the tourism industry, changes in the tourism season, the health of tourists and the quality of tourism experience. According to research, tourism accounts for about 5% of global CO2 emissions – a fifth of which is generated by the hospitality industry. Climate change affects tourism, and tourism also affects climate change. Because the tourism industry also emits greenhouse gases, especially as the tourism industry grows, the impact of tourism on the environment and climate will become more and more obvious.
The increase in the number of tourists has led to an increase in the number of luxury hotels and expanded the range of high-end product consumer groups. The equipment, food and other service functions provided by the hotel need to operate effectively 24 hours a day, and it is necessary to ensure that the service level is not lower than the comfort of the family. Also, passengers usually do not consider the consequences of consumption and do not have the consciousness of saving. Therefore, the existing legal, economic and technical development of energy conservation and emission reduction has not effectively reduced the greenhouse gas emissions of the hospitality industry and tourism. There are also very few achievable emission reduction targets or binding and guiding emission reduction policies and legislation for hotels and tourism within the country or region.
Climate warming will have a profound impact on the tourism industry. The impact of climate change on the tourism industry mainly includes: First, the direct impact on the tourism industry, including the increase in the frequency of extreme weather events, the distribution of climate resources in tourist destinations, and the increase in tourism operating costs. The second is indirect environmental impact. Climate change can cause chain changes in the environment, including lack of water resources, reduction of biodiversity, decline in the aesthetic value of landscapes, diseases, and damage to infrastructure. The third is the impact of tourism emission reduction policies on tourism flows, including price increases, changes in air routes, changes in the proportion of short-haul and long-haul flights, etc.
Students in the hospitality industry should know that improving climate change can lead to the beneficial development of the industry. Tourism transportation is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions in the tourism industry, and its energy saving and emission reduction effects will directly affect the results of the entire tourism industry. There are mainly the following ways to promote energy conservation and emission reduction in the tourism transportation industry: One is to encourage tourists to take trains, cars and other low-carbon transportation vehicles, or choose short-distance tourist destinations. The second is to improve the energy efficiency of transportation and advocate the use of clean energy through technological progress. The third is to reduce the carbon emissions of the aviation industry through various project cooperation or policies.
Tourist accommodation in carbon dioxide emissions is the second major focus. Energy conservation and emission reduction of tourism accommodation mainly include the following aspects: First, the energy system of tourism accommodation, including saving energy, and promoting the use of renewable energy and clean energy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Second, in terms of engineering and technical energy conservation of tourist accommodation facilities, the harmonious unity of tourist architecture and nature should be considered as much as possible. At the same time, we need to actively use modern building energy-saving technologies. Different indoor environment creation requires different energy-saving technologies.
Climate change and tourism are closely related. We need to use professional knowledge to change future climate change, so that the hospitality industry can continue to make progress in climate change. Also, the hospitality industry can also provide a great help in climate change.
