Brooklyn Botanical Garden: How Greenhouse Gases Interact with Plants in Tropical Environments

The Brooklyn Botanical Garden is one of the many places that utilize a greenhouse to conserve plant life at a specific temperature. Like most areas in New York, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden Greenhouse uses greenhouse gases to store heat energy for tropical plants. This heat energy is stored by receiving short wave energy from the sun to the windows inside the greenhouse. Once the greenhouse windows absorb the short-wave energy, it then releases long-wave energy out of the windows and everywhere in the vicinity. The fantastic ability of greenhouses is that each corner is covered with windows, which means rays of the long-wave energy bounce around, creating a tropical heat climate for certain types of plants to grow. What makes this amazing is that heat waves from the sun are being utilized instead of other heat sources like heaters or UV lamps. That’s because the sun is its energy source that can provide enough energy for a sustainable life.

We as humans are a prime example when the sunlight offers many benefits for us through not only heat but power. Since the short wave converts to long-wave energy, that long-wave energy converts back into our Earth. Just imagine natural heaters from the expansion of energy upon each impact of the surface. It’s like mini-explosions heating us always from greenhouse gases absorbing the long waves of energy. Some of those energies are sent back up into space while the rest are sent back into the Earth. What we see in this photo is the greenhouse heating up like an oven. This greenhouse is creating an unusually warm environment for plant life to survive. Trapping in long-wave radiation makes it a continuous hot environment for individual plants to live. The greenhouse is excellent because not only are you giving extra sunlight for plants but also a warm environment for constant growth. That is why the greenhouse in this garden is fantastic.

Circumstances of Greenhouse Overheating Plants

As you can see in this photo credited by Daniah Saifan, there are plants of different types growing in the greenhouse. These different types of plants are mostly for tropical environments. As you know, greenhouses create a specific atmosphere for the plant life of warm temperatures. Many plants can sustain life due to the long waves radiating upon each window, creating an environment life in the summer to a season like winter. With this, plants like what you see here in this image, can grow as much as they like. However, there is a chance when too much of a good thing becomes a problem. You see, if the long-wave energy accumulates to a degree where the greenhouse is heating more than the desired temperature, it can harm plant life inside of it. By increasing the heat and not keeping in touch with the degree, it can potentially overheat the plants, thus requiring more watering, especially dried up plants from dehydration.

We can see this with our environment as well. When we use energy that excretes greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide or methane, we are shutting ourselves in and overheating the conditions to a point where the icecaps will melt. Droughts are increasing more in other regions of the planet. That is why it is essential to cut dangerous emissions like fossil fuels and save us from potential harm. Just like what we see in this photo, they have a window open inside the greenhouse. This way it allows a more refreshing environment to prevent plant life from overheating. We can open that same window if we stop polluting the air and prevent our lives from overheating. So that way, we as humans can save the planet, which is our environment, not to control, but to secure.
